The low-disk warning usually arrives when you are already trying to finish something. It is tempting to select every checkbox, press Remove, and hope Windows knows what you meant. Some categories really are disposable; others can contain downloads, an old Windows installation, or files you still expect to recover. A calm two-minute review can prevent a miserable afternoon.

Windows 11 and Windows 10 both provide supported cleanup controls, although their labels and layout vary by release. Start in Settings, inspect the categories individually, and treat manual folder deletion as a last resort—not the normal maintenance routine.

First, find out whether temporary files are really the problem

  1. Open Settings → System → Storage.

  2. Wait for Windows to calculate usage, then compare Temporary files with Installed apps, Documents, Pictures, Videos, and Other.

  3. Note the free space before cleanup so you can judge whether the operation actually helped.

  4. If a work folder, virtual machine, game, media library, or application dominates the drive, deal with that category deliberately instead of repeatedly emptying Temp.

Use Windows Storage settings for the first cleanup

In Windows 11, open Settings → System → Storage and select Cleanup recommendations or Temporary files. Windows 10 commonly exposes Temporary files directly on the Storage page. Let the scan finish, then open each category rather than treating the list as one big cache.

Categories that deserve a second look

  • Downloads: these are your files, not generic system debris. Select this only after reviewing the Downloads folder.

  • Recycle Bin: removal is final through this cleanup path. Restore anything you may still need first.

  • Previous Windows installation or Windows.old: deleting it can remove the built-in option to return to the previous Windows version. Confirm the current upgrade is stable and that you no longer need rollback.

  • Windows Update Cleanup: can reclaim superseded update files, but may take time and may require administrator approval or a restart.

  • Delivery Optimization Files: cached update-delivery data is generally recreatable; removing it does not uninstall installed updates.

  • Thumbnails and temporary internet files: Windows and applications can recreate them, so the first load afterward may be slower.

  • Device driver packages, installation files, or dump files: retain these while diagnosing a driver, upgrade, or crash unless you have captured the evidence you need.

Select only understood categories, choose Remove files or Clean up, approve User Account Control if Windows requests it, and leave the PC powered while system cleanup completes. Reopen Storage afterward and compare free space. A category may remain visible because files are currently in use or because Windows generated new temporary data during normal work.

Let Storage Sense handle routine housekeeping

Storage Sense can remove unnecessary temporary files automatically and can empty the Recycle Bin on a schedule. Open Settings → System → Storage → Storage Sense, read every choice, and use a schedule that matches how often you rely on recently deleted files.

  • Automatic system and app temporary-file cleanup is the least surprising starting point.

  • Recycle Bin retention is a recovery window. A shorter interval gives you less time to undo an accidental deletion.

  • Downloads cleanup is optional and should remain off unless you intentionally use Downloads as disposable staging space.

  • Cloud-content settings can make locally cached OneDrive files online-only after an inactivity period. This frees local space but is different from deleting a file from OneDrive.

  • Deleting a synchronized OneDrive file can propagate the deletion; using the supported Free up space action keeps the cloud item and removes only its local copy.

  • Settings can be managed or restricted by an organization, so do not override policy on a work or school device.

Disk Cleanup remains a useful fallback

Disk Cleanup is still available on many Windows 10 and Windows 11 systems. It is especially useful when the newer Storage view is unavailable or when you need the separate Clean up system files scan.

What this launch does—and does not do

  • cleanmgr opens a graphical review screen; deletion begins only after you choose categories and confirm.

  • Choose the correct drive, then select Clean up system files if you need an elevated second scan.

  • Read the description for every highlighted category, applying the same caution to Downloads, Recycle Bin, previous installations, and diagnostic evidence.

  • The interface and available categories depend on the Windows version, permissions, and current system state.

Manual Temp cleanup is the last resort

If a specific application’s stale temporary files are known to be the issue, close that application, save open work, press Windows + R, enter %TEMP%, and inspect the folder. Delete only items you recognize as temporary. Prefer a normal File Explorer deletion so recovery remains possible, and skip anything Windows reports as in use.

  • Restart first if you suspect abandoned files; active applications may legitimately hold temporary files open.

  • Sort by date or size and inspect unexpected large folders before removing them.

  • Do not force ownership, change permissions, or kill system processes just to delete a locked file.

  • Do not manually purge Windows, WinSxS, Installer, SoftwareDistribution, ProgramData, or an application’s data tree based on a generic cleanup tip.

  • Avoid blanket del /s /q, PowerShell recursive removal, registry cleaners, and third-party “one-click” cleaners. A small storage gain is not worth an unreviewable deletion scope.

When Temp fills up again

Microsoft Store or app installation data keeps returning

  1. Finish pending Windows and Microsoft Store updates, then restart.

  2. Open the Microsoft Store, sign in if appropriate, and update installed apps.

  3. Press Windows + R, run wsreset.exe, and wait for the Store to reopen. This resets the Store cache; it is not a general disk-cleaning command.

  4. Use the Windows troubleshooter or the app’s Advanced options to Repair before considering Reset. Reset can remove app data, preferences, or sign-in state.

  5. If the growth continues, record which folder is expanding and when, then investigate that application or update failure instead of scheduling endless deletions.

Storage reports a size that does not add up

  • Allow the Storage calculation to finish and restart after a large update or cleanup.

  • Check installed apps, restore points, hibernation, virtual machines, package caches, user profiles, and synchronized folders.

  • Run a trusted security scan if unexplained growth accompanies unusual processes, network use, or other signs of compromise.

  • On a managed device, ask IT to inspect logging, update, endpoint-security, and retention policies before deleting protected data.

A safer decision before every Remove button

  • Can I recreate it? Caches and thumbnails usually return; personal downloads may not.

  • Does it preserve recovery? Recycle Bin, crash evidence, and Windows.old each provide a different kind of recovery window.

  • Is it synchronized? Local-only removal and cloud deletion are not the same operation.

  • Do I have a verified backup? A backup is useful only when you know it contains the important files and can be restored.

  • Did the cleanup solve the cause? Measure free space afterward and investigate recurring growth.

A successful cleanup is pleasantly uneventful: enough room returns, Windows still behaves normally, and tomorrow-you can still find the files that mattered. That is a better result than chasing the largest number on the screen.
