The risky moment in account linking is not clicking Save. It is copying a customer ID from the wrong browser tab and quietly giving an agency, old test account, or manager hierarchy access to channel-derived data. A good setup starts by naming the two owners and agreeing on the permissions before either side opens a settings page.
What linking enables—and what it does not
The channel owner can allow the linked Ads account to see organic video view metrics.
The owner can allow creation of data segments based on eligible viewer interactions with the linked channel.
Depending on the link and eligibility, engagement information can support measurement and advertising workflows.
Linking does not let the advertiser upload, edit, or delete videos from the YouTube channel.
Linking does not give the YouTube owner administrative control over the Google Ads account.
Running a creator’s video as an ad still requires sufficient usage rights; an account link is not a content licence.
Collect the identifiers before opening settings
YouTube channel: verify the channel handle, public URL, and owner in YouTube Studio rather than relying on a logo or display name.
Google Ads customer ID: copy the ten-digit ID from the intended Ads account; hyphens are presentation formatting.
Link owner: record the person responsible for approving, reviewing, and later removing the relationship.
Purpose: decide whether the need is view metrics, channel-interaction data segments, campaign use, or a specific creator video.
Review date: agency and campaign relationships should not remain linked indefinitely without an owner.
Check access on both sides
Google requires administrative access to the Google Ads account for linking. On the YouTube side, channel-permission roles differ: current YouTube guidance lists Owner, Manager, Editor, and Editor (Limited) as able to link Ads accounts, while Viewer roles cannot. Use delegated channel permissions instead of sharing a Google Account password.
Open the Google Ads account’s access page and confirm the approver has Admin access.
In YouTube Studio, confirm the signed-in identity is operating on the intended channel and has a role that can link accounts.
If a separate channel owner must approve, contact them before sending a request so it does not look suspicious or expire unnoticed.
Capture the customer ID and link purpose in your change record, but never record passwords or session cookies.
Create the link from YouTube Studio
Sign in to YouTube Studio and switch to the correct channel.
Open Settings, choose Channel, and open Advanced settings.
Find the Google Ads account linking area and select Link Account.
Give the relationship a name that identifies the advertiser or purpose rather than writing “Ads account”.
Enter the Google Ads customer ID and verify every digit against the Ads account header.
Choose only the permissions required for the agreed measurement or audience workflow.
Select Done, then Save the channel settings.
Google’s current product-linking documentation calls the YouTube Studio route the recommended approach. Interface wording can move, so use the feature name and account identifiers as anchors instead of trusting an old screenshot.
Approve the request in the Ads account
Sign in to the exact Google Ads customer account named in the request—not merely its manager account.
Open the product or linked-account area and locate the incoming YouTube request.
Compare channel identity, request name, customer ID, permissions, and requester with the agreed change.
Approve the request only when every field matches.
Return to both products and confirm the relationship shows as linked rather than pending.
Verify the useful outcome, not just the Linked label
Confirm the expected channel appears under linked products in the intended Google Ads customer account.
Confirm the same customer ID and link name appear in YouTube Studio.
Review which metric and data-segment permissions are enabled.
If you need channel-interaction data segments, confirm personalized ads are enabled and the content is eligible under Google policy.
Allow reporting and audience population time; a linked status does not create historical reach instantly.
Record who verified the link and when it should next be reviewed.
Why the audience segment is empty
Google now uses “your data segments” where older tutorials said “remarketing lists.” Linking is only one prerequisite. Personalized ads must be enabled, content marked made for kids is not eligible for this use, sensitive content can be restricted, membership duration affects retention, and Google documents a minimum active-user threshold before a segment can serve.
No segment source: reopen the link and confirm data collection or data-segment permission was granted.
Personalized ads disabled: the channel cannot provide the expected earned-action reporting or interaction segments.
Ineligible content: made-for-kids or sensitive-content rules can prevent audience use.
Too little eligible activity: a successfully linked channel can still have a segment too small to serve.
Manager sharing confusion: verify whether the segment belongs to the child account and whether sharing is intentionally enabled.
Troubleshoot a pending or missing link
Pending request: the Ads administrator has not accepted it; check the incoming request and notification in the correct customer account.
Link Account unavailable: verify the YouTube role and Google Ads Admin access rather than repeatedly refreshing.
Wrong channel appears: switch channel identity in YouTube Studio and cancel the incorrect request.
Wrong customer ID: remove or decline the request, then create a new one with the verified ID.
Already linked error: inspect existing links in both products, including manager-account context, before creating duplicates.
Generic browser error: Google suggests retrying in a private window or another browser/network after confirming identities and permissions.
Unlink deliberately when the relationship ends
In YouTube Studio, return to Settings → Channel → Advanced settings, choose Unlink beside the account, confirm, and Save. Also verify the change from Google Ads and assess campaigns, measurement, and data segments that depended on the connection before removing it during an active campaign.
